And the things you need to create a free blog.

GETTING STARTED WITH BLOGGING

What is a blog?

A blog is a personal website that is organized in reverse chronological order (i.e. newest content appears first).

It can be a stand-alone website like this one,

OR

Part of another website.

What a blog isn't.

A blog is not a static website, online shop, or social account even though it has some features like the sites listed above. 

What you need to start a blog.

You need the following

1. Hosting

2. Domain name

3. Blogging platform

4. Blog theme

5. Niche

#Hosting

Hosting is simply an online space where you can store your content.

If you want to start up a Self-host blog, you will pay for it.

But I will show you how to get a 100% free lifetime hosting package in this blog post.

# Domain name

Also called website URL, domain URL, or website name. It is the link your visitors will use to locate your content online.

That's why it's called URL - Uniform Resource Locator.

It can be cheap or very expensive to purchase but I will show you how to get a free domain URL or extremely cheap domain name.

Your domain name should portray your blog title ( which might be your brand name).

#Blogging Platform

These are platforms that enable you to create and publish your content.

They are called CMS platforms.

E.g. Blogger, WordPress WIX, etc.

To create a free blog you need to choose a free blogging platform.

#Blog theme

This is what determines the look and feel of your blog.

There are lots of themes (also called templates) available to choose from, but your theme must meet the following criteria.

1. It must be beautiful and elegant.

2. It must load fast.

3. It must be responsive (i.e. to appear nice on both desktop and mobile devices).

4. It must support ads.

5. It must be SEO-friendly.

# Niche

Your niche is your area of specialization and target market. It helps keep you on track.

It can be about what you love doing, what you are knowledgeable at or what you are passionate about.

Note: your niche should be a topic you won't get bored writing about.

To create a free blog in 2022 without spending a dime, you need to follow the steps below.

1. Niche down

Decide on what you want to write about.

The topic should be one that you are passionate about, knowledgeable about and people are searching for.

2. Choose a Blogging platform

I use Blogger.

And that's what I'm recommending for this tutorial.

3. Create your blog 

To create a free blog on Blogger, head over to blogger.com

Click on the  create a blog button,

Sign up with your Gmail account.

Choose your URL, blog title and display name then click finish.

4. Install a Blogger theme

your theme determines what your blog will look like.

By default, Blogger themes are outdated and not beautiful, but there are several sites where you can download and install beautiful Blogger themes from.

5. Customize your blog theme

The next step after installing a beautiful theme to your blog is to customize it.

You need to brand the blog.

To do this, follow the steps below.

Add a brand favicon

Favicon is the small icon showing beside your website on a browser.

It makes your blog look more professional and helps your audience to recognize your site.

Add a Header logo

Your Header logo is made up of your business/brand logo, and blog title with your special brand character.

Edit blog layout

To edit your blog layout is to either add, delete or make changes to the gadgets in your blog niche. This is part of customizing your blog.

Add a custom domain name (optional)

By default, your free Blogger blog will come with a free .blogspot.com domain name like mine blogger4newbiesng.blogspot.com 

But you can actually purchase and install a custom domain name to make your blog look more professional.

If you are a Nigerian, a .com.ng domain name will be ideal because it's cheap and ranks well for searches made by Nigerians.

MAKING MONEY WITH A FREE BLOG

Can someone actually make money with a free blog?

If that's the question in your mind now, then the answer is YES.

You can make money with a free blog and that's what this tutorial is all about.

There are basically 3 major ways to make money with a free blog.

    1. Google AdSense

Google AdSense is a program run by Google which website publishers can use to make money online by displaying ads on their website or blog. It's a free and simple way Content creators can monetize their content.

And It's even better If you are blogging with Blogger because you can easily link your blog to AdSense by clicking the Earnings tab in your Blogger dashboard.

NOTE: Your Blogger must meet certain requirements for it to be able to show Google ads and start making money.

Google clearly states some of the requirements below.

    2. Affiliate Links

Another way to monetize your blog is through affiliate links.

Here you refer other people's products to your readers by inserting your unique affiliate link to your content so that your readers can easily click it and make purchases.

You are paid by your affiliate platform each time your readers buy with your link.

The best way to use this method is to:

1. Create quality content and earn your reader's trust.

2. Sign up for an affiliate program.

3. Choose a product.

4. Get your affiliate link.

5. Insert the link to your blog post and that is it.

    3. Digital Products

The third option is the one I mostly use.

Here you create and sell digital products like eBooks and Video courses to your audience.

To do this, first, discover the pain point of your audience and then decide on which digital product you will like to create.

The most easier is an eBook.

After creating and publishing your digital products, you can then showcase them in one of your blog posts and start making sales.
